The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word artist and performing in live poetry readings. Her next collaboration was together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They ended up collaborating and co-writing You Got Me. During Roots' show she came out to be an artist. She then secured collaborations, for instance, with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. Additionally, she gained experience as an actor during the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
